This is from a portfolio of large, original aquatints entitled, Doorways. Utilizing doors, both open and closed, as a compelling theme, the series explored the imagery of a portion of a run-down New York street. Doorway numbers such as 686, 688 and 696 indicate that these entrances and exits were in close proximity. It is possible that Michael Kirk created these prints at the Pratt Graphics Center, New York at about the time he received his degree from the Pratt Institute.
*Museum of Modern Art in New York lists his Doorway aquatints in its permanent collection.
